Thriving in the Second Half of Life

As boomers and pre-boomers we are charting new territory on what it looks like to embrace the Second Half of Life, and as an adventurer, that suits me just fine!  I am a passionate advocate of Thriving in the Second Half of Life. One of the things that excites me is that there are likely to be many more chapters ahead because lots of us are going to be around for over 100 years!  How will we use those added years?  Even more importantly, “How will we ensure a high quality of life during that extended life span?”  Questions, questions, questions!

Well, I don’t have all of the answers and that keeps me committed to being open to possibilities.  And, that approach is what is behind this blog, a curious mind and an open heart.  I invite you to join me in living into the questions and exploring the realms of the mind, the body and the spirit.  The journey will include pragmatic ways to improve our lives and in doing so improve the quality of our families and communities.  I am particularly curious about how some of us have chosen to “burn out,” what it takes to come back from that experience and how we live our lives differently out of that.

Curiosity on what the second half would be like began for me over ten years ago when I was fifty.  At that time I felt like I was on the top-of-the world, I had a new masters’ degree, I was in a relationship that meant a great deal to me, and I was inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead, not only for myself but for other women my age and older.  So, I offered “Aging with Passion and Purpose” as a workshop at Bellevue Community College.  What followed was a ten year plus relationship with six stellar women and major shifts for all of us that inform who we are today.  The dreams, the challenges, the commitment for quality living are topics I will share along the way.

So, do join me on a journey of self-discovery and “Soul Satisfaction.”

    First of all, C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S on the long-awaited launch of your blog! (Cue the balloons and disco music!)
Secondly, I wonder if you’ve considered doing another “Aging with Passion and Purpose” workshop at BCC. Seems like now that the journey through the 2nd half has truly begun for the Boomer generation, it might be a very popular workshop. Although to be politically correct, you might want to call it something like “Act 2: Living with Passion and Purpose in the Second Half of Life” or something like that… =^)

    way to go, Sandra!
I think of the Parker Palmer quote about not asking what the world needs, but asking what lights you up, because what the world so desperately needs is lit-up people-
and you sure are one! what a gift to the “second act-ers”
